Can Christian democracy save America from Trump?

Religious conservatism doesn’t have to be populist. It has played an important role for democracy and dignity in Europe – and can do so in the US, too

Trump Admininstration Takes Aim At Defunding Planned Parenthood

The Trump administration found a back-alley way to defund Planned Parenthood on Friday, allowing states to block the women’s health organization from receiving any Medicaid funding. The move would undo Obama-era guidelines that warned states that cutting off Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood may violate federal law. Trump officials said the move would return some power…

Mike Pence and Donald Trump Both Hate Global Warming

Mike Pence and Donald Trump's willful ignorance of climate change

Despite Pence’s objections to federal efforts to combat climate change, he apparently has no problem asking the federal government to fund green jobs in his state. As Think Progress reported, in 2009 Pence wrote a letter to then-US Secretary of Energy Steven Chu supporting a grant application submitted by an Indiana company that wanted to use algae to produce fuels. “Algae production directly addresses all of the significant challenges being faced by the US,” wrote Pence, “namely domestic energy security, greenhouse gas emissions, scientific leadership in a variety of industries, and broad-based green job creation.”

Democrats vs. Republicans: It Will Only Get Worse Until We Stop Playing the Game of Villain Politics

Game of villain politics

Bernie Sanders, who eschewed Super PAC and corporate money, who was essentially blacked out by the media and largely disparaged and dismissed when they did mention him, and was hampered in every way the DNC could think to hamper him without explicitly appearing to favor their queen, is only about 200 pledged delegates behind Clinton.

These facts, in addition to the myriad polls showing how much better Sanders polls against Trump and that Clinton is the subject of an FBI criminal investigation, do not support the myth that Clinton is a stronger nominee to send into the general election.

So when superdelegates, many of whom threw their favor to Clinton before anyone else entered the race or before the first debate (they don’t even TRY to hide the system of cronyism!), claim they are choosing the candidate best positioned to win the general, I don’t believe them for a second. They are playing the game, a game by which you win if you have a villain and you can make everyone live in fear.

Obama To Sign Revamped Toxic Chemical Rules, Give EPA New Authority

EPA given new authority over toxic chemicals

Along with updating rules for tens of thousands of everyday chemicals used in household cleaners, clothing and furniture, the bill also sets safety standards for harmful chemicals like formaldehyde and styrene, and minerals such as asbestos.

The Associated Press reported White House press secretary Josh Earnest saying the bill was an outlier in a political climate in which the two parties agree on little.

Donald Trump unleashes a blitzkrieg of bile in an attempt to exploit fear for votes

donald trump puzzle

Trump’s response to the tragedy in Orlando has been anything but presidential. While more sober voices have urged a calm, but determined response to this latest mindless act of violence, he has advocated a wild-eyed, scatter-shot approach that seeks to damage as many targets as possible with the anger and resentment that are the foundation of his campaign.

He ignored the fact gunman Omar Mateen was an American born in New York, portraying him instead as a foreign intruder allowed into the country by slipshod immigration policies crippled by political correctness. He all but called U.S. President Barack Obama a traitor, implying none too subtly that the president of the United States secretly sympathizes with radical Islam. He heaped praise on himself while insisting he sought no praise. He widened his call for a ban on Muslims entering the country to a ban on entry from any country where there had been a terrorist attack, a blockade so sweeping it would presumably include Canada and much of the Western world. Once residents of Canada, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and large parts of Africa had been forbidden entry into the U.S., who does the Republican nominee figure would be left?
