Sanders’ Youth Revolution: Who Will They Support?

Youth montage

History has proven that young people’s votes matter: In 2012, for example, at least 80 electoral votes were dependent upon voters under 30, according to Circle data. Without the youth vote, the swing states of Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia, which supported Obama that year, would have gone red. Mitt Romney could have become president.

In the YouGov poll, 32 percent of Sanders supporters under 30 said they’d choose a third-party option if the senator didn’t make the ballot.

For many young Sanders supporters, however, getting a victory in the 2016 presidential election is no longer the point. It’s about 2020 — and beyond.

EA News commentary: The poll conducted here may be informal, but the results show that nine out of 29 students categorically support the Green Party candidate, Jill Stein and two others would pick between her and another candidate. That gives Dr. Stein the largest wedge of supporters when it comes to this sampling of young Bernie Sanders voters.

NBC Presidential Poll: Clinton Expands Lead Over Trump, Third Parties Receiving Double Digits With Almost No Media Coverage

Presidential candidates poll
EAN Editorial note: A presidential poll even more recent than the one in the story below shows candidates Jill Stein and Gary Johnson with almost 25% of the vote between them, so it seems that third parties may be gaining traction quickly. This is impressive seeing that the mainstream media has barely covered either the Green Party or Libertarian Party candidates so far.
more recent poll
This more recent poll also included Bernie Sanders who received an impressive 40% of the preference votes.

Now back to the main news story…

The poll found Clinton was ahead 49 percent to 42 percent. The week prior the former secretary of state led Trump 48 percent to 44 percent.

Clinton also led in the poll when the race was expanded to a four-way competition that included Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson and Green Party candidate Jill Stein. Clinton earned 42 percent support, Trump 38 percent, Johnson 9 percent and Stein 5 percent.
